Precision Resurfacing with ErFrac: Fractional Ablative Erbium Laser

The Gold-Standard Erbium Fractional Laser Resurfacing

ErFrac is Princeton Aesthetics’ fractional ablative erbium laser resurfacing treatment, delivered exclusively through our Fotona SP Dynamis — one of the most advanced laser platforms in aesthetic medicine. Using the Er:YAG 2940nm wavelength in a fractional ablative mode, ErFrac creates precise microscopic ablation zones deep within the dermis, triggering powerful collagen remodeling while preserving the surrounding tissue for faster, safer healing.

Whether you’re targeting acne scars, deep lines, uneven texture, enlarged pores, or sun-damaged skin, ErFrac delivers transformative results with 3–5 days of downtime — substantially less than traditional full-field ablative resurfacing.

HOW ERFRAC WORKS

ACNE SCAR REMODELING

ErFrac penetrates into atrophic acne scars, ablating fibrotic scar tissue and triggering new collagen to fill the defect from below. Rolling, boxcar, and superficial ice-pick scars respond well. Multiple sessions may be used for deeper scarring.

FINE LINES & WRINKLES

Perioral lines (around the mouth), periorbital lines (crow's feet), and forehead lines are effectively addressed. The ablative column removes textured surface skin while collagen remodeling plumps from within.

HYPERPIGMENTATION & SUN DAMAGE

Solar lentigines, diffuse sun damage, and uneven pigmentation are cleared as the ablated surface sheds and is replaced by new, evenly pigmented skin. The Er:YAG wavelength's precision minimizes post-treatment pigmentation risk.

What is ErFrac?

The Precise Fractional Ablative Erbium Laser

ErFrac stands for Erbium Fractional — a true ablative laser resurfacing technique using the Er:YAG (Erbium:Yttrium-Aluminum-Garnet) laser at 2940nm wavelength. This wavelength is uniquely matched to water absorption in tissue, making it the most precise ablative laser wavelength available.

The “fractional” aspect means the laser treats only a fraction of the skin surface at a time, leaving columns of untreated tissue between treatment zones. These healthy tissue bridges accelerate healing, dramatically reducing downtime compared to traditional fully-ablative resurfacing.

The Fotona SP Dynamis runs ErFrac in a controlled fractional mode with adjustable density, depth, and pulse parameters — giving Dr. Jetty precise command over resurfacing depth for each patient’s unique skin concerns and tolerance.

ErFrac is NOT the same as Fotona’s Smooth mode. Smooth mode uses the Er:YAG in a non-ablative, superficial thermal mode for mucosal tightening. ErFrac is a true ablative fractional treatment — it removes controlled columns of tissue and drives deep collagen remodeling.

FRACTIONAL ABLATION

The Fotona SP Dynamis delivers Er:YAG 2940nm laser energy in a fractional pattern, creating thousands of Microscopic Ablation Zones (MAZs) in the dermis. Each column ablates the damaged superficial layer while stimulating fibroblasts to produce new collagen and elastin.

COLLAGEN REMODELING

In the weeks and months following treatment, the skin undergoes deep remodeling. New collagen is laid down, dermal volume is rebuilt, and surface texture improves progressively. Full results develop over 3–6 months as collagen matures.

Why Choose ErFrac?

THE FRACTIONAL ABLATIVE ADVANTAGE

Er:YAG PRECISION

At 2940nm, the Er:YAG wavelength is absorbed by water in tissue 12–16× more efficiently than CO2. This means cleaner ablation, minimal residual thermal damage, lower post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation risk, and faster healing recovery.

SUPERIOR PRECISION VS CO2

CO2 fractional lasers produce more residual heat in surrounding tissue — longer healing times and higher PIH risk, especially for medium-to-darker skin. Er:YAG 2940nm ablates with significantly less thermal damage, making ErFrac safer across a broader range of Fitzpatrick skin types (I–V).

SAFER FOR MORE SKIN TYPES

The Er:YAG wavelength's superior water absorption means less non-specific thermal damage to melanocytes. This reduces hyperpigmentation risk for medium-to-darker skin tones (Fitzpatrick III–V) — patients who are often poor candidates for CO2 fractional.

PHYSICIAN-PERFORMED RESURFACING

All ErFrac treatments at Princeton Aesthetics are performed by Dr. Siva Teja Jetty, MD, MSBA. Treatment depth, density, and pulse parameters are customized per patient — not run on manufacturer presets. Dr. Jetty brings 6+ years of proprietary laser protocol development to every session.

3–5 DAYS DOWNTIME

By treating 20–50% of the skin surface per session while leaving healthy tissue bridges intact, ErFrac achieves significant resurfacing results with just 3–5 days of downtime — substantially less than the 7–14+ days required for full-field ablative resurfacing.

FOTONA SP DYNAMIS PLATFORM

Princeton Aesthetics uses the Fotona SP Dynamis — a true physician-grade dual-wavelength platform (Er:YAG + Nd:YAG) with MSS (Micro Smooth Surface) technology for uniform fractional beam delivery. Not a consumer-grade erbium device.

How does ErFrac work?

Mechanism of Action

The Fotona SP Dynamis delivers the Er:YAG 2940nm laser energy in a fractional pattern, creating thousands of Microscopic Ablation Zones (MAZs) in the targeted skin. Each column penetrates precisely into the dermis, removing damaged superficial layers while stimulating fibroblasts to produce new collagen and elastin.

At 2940nm, the Er:YAG wavelength is absorbed by water in tissue approximately 12–16× more efficiently than the CO2 laser — delivering cleaner ablation, minimal residual thermal damage, lower post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation risk, and faster healing. Full collagen remodeling results develop over 3–6 months as new collagen matures.

By treating 20–50% of the skin surface per session while leaving healthy tissue bridges intact, ErFrac achieves significant resurfacing results with just 3–5 days of downtime versus 7–14+ days for full-field ablative resurfacing.

FRACTIONAL ABLATION ZONES

ErFrac creates precisely controlled Microscopic Ablation Zones (MAZs) using the Er:YAG 2940nm wavelength. Each zone ablates a column of damaged tissue from surface to dermis, while untreated bridges between zones accelerate healing and reduce downtime.

ACNE & SURGICAL SCARS

Mature scars from acne, surgery, injury, or stretch marks respond to Er:YAG fractional ablation, which breaks down rigid scar collagen and replaces it with more organized, flexible tissue over 3–6 months of remodeling.

PIGMENTATION & SUN DAMAGE

Fractional ablation removes pigmented surface layers, while the healing process replaces them with new, evenly pigmented skin. Solar lentigines, melasma patches, and diffuse sun damage all respond well to Er:YAG fractional resurfacing.

PORE & TEXTURE REFINEMENT

Rough, coarse skin texture and enlarged pores are smoothed as fractional resurfacing renews the surface layer and tightens surrounding dermis. Milia and surface irregularities are addressed with precise ablative depth control.

SCAR REMODELING

The fractional ablation columns disrupt fibrotic scar architecture and stimulate organized collagen replacement. Atrophic, hypertrophic, and post-surgical scars progressively improve over 3–6 months following treatment.

ANTI-AGING & FINE LINES

Fractional ablation removes textured, photoaged surface skin while the collagen remodeling response restores dermal volume and elasticity. Progressive improvement in fine lines and skin laxity continues for up to 6 months post-treatment.

SKIN TIGHTENING

The thermal component of fractional ablation causes immediate tissue contraction and long-term collagen remodeling, producing mild-to-moderate skin tightening. Particularly effective on perioral and periorbital areas.

HYPERPIGMENTATION & SUN DAMAGE

The Er:YAG 2940nm wavelength selectively ablates pigmented surface layers with minimal residual thermal spread, reducing post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation risk compared to CO2. Effective for solar lentigines, uneven skin tone, and sun-damaged skin.

Overall, ErFrac combines advanced laser technologies to facilitate significant skin rejuvenation, targeting multiple concerns while ensuring patient comfort and remarkable results.

Who & What Concerns Does ErFrac Address?

ErFrac is indicated for patients seeking meaningful improvement in skin quality, texture, and appearance. Dr. Jetty uses ErFrac to address:

Frequently Asked Questions

Is ErFrac Safe for Everyone?

The Er:YAG 2940nm wavelength produces significantly less residual thermal damage than CO2, making ErFrac a safer choice for Fitzpatrick skin types I–V — a broader range than CO2 fractional laser allows. Dr. Jetty assesses every patient individually and adjusts density and depth for patients with higher pigmentation risk. Active tans and active acne are contraindications. A consultation establishes your suitability.

For mild-to-moderate concerns (texture, early acne scars, fine lines), 1–2 sessions often achieve excellent results. Moderate-to-severe acne scarring typically requires 2–3 sessions spaced 4–8 weeks apart. Dr. Jetty will assess your skin at consultation and recommend a realistic protocol based on your specific concerns and skin type.

A topical anesthetic is applied 30–45 minutes before treatment. Most patients describe a warm, prickling sensation — well-tolerated with the numbing cream. The Fotona SP Dynamis’s precise pulse control minimizes discomfort compared to older Er:YAG systems. No intravenous sedation is required.

Expect 3–5 days of visible healing: redness, mild swelling, micro-crusting, and peeling. Most patients feel comfortable returning to work and social activities by day 5–7 once peeling is complete. Residual pinkness can persist 1–2 weeks and is easily covered with mineral makeup.

Temporary redness, swelling, and micro-crusting are expected and normal parts of healing. Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) is possible, particularly in Fitzpatrick types III–V, which is why Dr. Jetty adjusts treatment parameters for each patient. Serious complications are rare when treatment is performed at appropriate settings by a qualified physician.

Gently cleanse with a mild non-irritating cleanser twice daily. Apply the prescribed healing balm or moisturizer consistently. Avoid sun exposure for a minimum of 2 weeks post-treatment; SPF 30+ is mandatory once healed. Avoid retinoids and active exfoliants until the skin is fully healed (approximately 7–10 days). Do not pick or force peeling skin.

ErFrac (Er:YAG fractional) achieves medium-to-deep ablative resurfacing with 3–5 days downtime and is safe for Fitzpatrick I–V. CO2 fractional reaches deeper but requires 7–14 days of downtime and carries higher hyperpigmentation risk — limiting its safe use to Fitzpatrick I–III. Non-ablative options (Nd:YAG fractional, RF microneedling) require no downtime but deliver more limited remodeling results. ErFrac occupies the optimal balance of depth, safety, and recovery for most resurfacing candidates.
